Letters, April 5: Canadians exhausted by taxes

Should the city quash illegal surface lots? Vote in our daily poll!
Canadians are reeling because of rising costs on everything in their lives. They’ve just become cash cows, taxed to death by politicians who vote themselves pay raises and executives who receive bonuses after employee layoffs. They feel no guilt squeezing us for every dime while financially taking care of themselves. It’s hard to be a proud Canadian due to our government’s loss of respect and worldwide political failures. Many Canadians look down trodden like those of a third world country.
Peter J. Middlemore Sr.
(We hope people vote for change in the next election.)
Reality check
Let’s get real for a moment. Who exactly is this former mayor of Calgary in the scheme of things? Nenshi hasn’t even been picked yet as Notley’s replacement at the NDP leadership convention this June. Besides, the provincial NDP will fade into the political landscape background, becoming nothing more than a fringe entity in Alberta’s political scene. Albertans have long memories of those infamous years from 2015 to 2019, when everything political went south for those four long years.
Donald K. Munroe
(Some remember having it better in those years.)
Bungled budget
It is too bad that our budget process has been so blatantly turned into a vehicle for re-election rather than one that puts the best interests of the nation ahead of all else. But look who our PM is. He had eight years to address most of the issues that the current budget finally and lo and behold now addresses.
George Ewert
(Don’t think he’s trying to hide it.)
Taxed to death
John Snobelen, in his column “Trudeau spending our money on worthless vanity projects” about our prime minister and vanity is right on (March 30). His comment that we need to pay tax on everything is not. Why do I have to pay tax on any food? Why do I have to pay tax on something I resell. Why do I have to pay capital gains on something I or my parents have worked on all our lives. Why can’t I give my children all I have worked for without giving the government a piece of it? I could go on and on. We here in Canada are taxed to death. But, as always, we turtle and take it.

(Why Canadians remain so complacent as the government — at all levels — keeps taking more from us)
